KCB Rugby speedster Floyd Wabwire has credited celebrated sprints coach Geoffrey Kimani for sharpening the unique running style that has made him one of the most exciting players on the current rugby scene.
The former Daystar University star is known for his unique front-running style. Wabwire often dazzles fans by cutting across the field, flooring defenders, and bursting into spaces with lightning pace.

His sprinter’s acceleration regularly leaves markers in his wake, a trait that has helped him deliver crucial tries for the Bankers.
In an interview with Mozzart Sport, Wabwire revealed that his distinctive pace can be traced back to his time under Kimani, who is currently the coach of Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala.
“I used to train for sprinting back then, but right now, I am doing my all to score for my club,” Wabwire said. “During the 2022/23 season, I was coached by Geoffrey Kimani when he was our strength and conditioning coach. He motivated me to run, and right now, I am doing it with the current SnC. We are hoping things will be good in the future."
Wabwire was introduced to Kimani when he joined the national team setup in the 2022/23 season, during Kimani’s tenure as Shujaa’s strength and conditioning coach.
The sprinter-inspired training boosted his raw speed and equipped him with the explosive running angles that continue to define his game.
His pace eventually earned him a national team debut at the 2023 HSBC World Rugby 7s Series in New Zealand and Australia.
The conversation around rugby players transitioning into athletics is not new. Omanyala himself had a rugby background before shifting fully to sprinting, while Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) winger Tyson Juma has also taken the same path and now represents Kenya in track events.
But for Wabwire, the decision to follow that route remains uncertain.
“I am not so sure about switching to sprinting in the future,” he admitted.
For now, his focus remains on KCB Rugby, where he was instrumental in the team’s recent Kabeberi 7s triumph. Wabwire scored three tries during the tournament, helping the Bankers secure their fourth consecutive title.
KCB are now eyeing at least a quarterfinal appearance at next weekend’s Dala 7s, which would guarantee them the overall National 7s Circuit crown.
