Kenya Lionesses stalwart Naomi Amuguni is confident that the lessons learned from the team's HSBC SVNS 2 campaign will play a key role as the team shifts focus to the upcoming Rugby Africa Women’s Performance Division tournament, set for Thursday, 21 to Sunday, 31 May at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi.

The Lionesses endured a difficult run in the series, finishing fifth in the opening leg in Nairobi before struggling in Montevideo, Uruguay, where they again managed a single win, finishing bottom of the standings.

However, the team recovered in Brazil with a second-place finish.

According to Amuguni, the experience exposed the team to the demands of elite competition and highlighted areas they must improve ahead of the 15s tournament.

“It has given us confidence and shown us what other levels have to offer. It has shown us that the top level is very competitive and you always have to put your best foot forward,” she said.

The experienced flanker added that the disappointing fifth-place finish in the series served as a wake-up call for the squad.

“We were focused on reaching the World Championship, but due to some factors, we finished fifth. It was a wake-up call for us, not to stop at Brazil, but to push harder because there is still room to reach the next level,” she noted.

Kenya will begin their Rugby Africa campaign against Uganda on Saturday, 24 May, before facing Madagascar on Wednesday, 27 May, and defending champions South Africa on Sunday, 31 May.

Amuguni, who is marking six years with the national team, said the journey has shaped her both on and off the pitch.

“It has had its ups and downs, especially during COVID-19. At some point, I even thought it might affect rugby and my progress in the sport. But instead of relaxing, I pushed myself harder. I focused more on my speed, gym work, and overall form, and that helped me grow,” she said.

She also credited teamwork and discipline for her growth in the game.

“I’ve learnt to always listen to my teammates and coaches because without their guidance, you cannot go far. Rugby is a team sport, and the people you play with and around you play a big role in your development,” she added.

Amuguni recently helped Mwamba RFC Women secure a historic fifth straight title after beating Quins Queens 29-20 in the final.
