Hamilton 7s: What to expect from Shujaa debutant Floyd Wabwire

Wabwire is one of two debutants alongside Menengai Oilers center John Okoth.

Daystar University star Floyd Wabwire raised a number of eyebrows following his inclusion in the national men’s sevens side, Shujaa squad for Hamilton and Sydney 7s with Ronnie Omondi revealing what he brings to the team.

Wabwire who joined Daystar Falcons RFC from St Peter's Mumias Boys' High School back in 2020 has been training with the Kenya 7s for some time and finally convinced head coach Damian McGrath to include him in the squad.

The Varsity side has recently been a conveyor belt for rugby talent as they have also produced Ronnie Omondi who recently made his debut in the Dubai and Cape Town leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

Omondi who played with Wabwire at the East Africa University games in Kampala, Uganda back in 2021 offered a glimpse of what to expect from the debutant.

“I'm happy for Floyd because it's been a long time coming, he has been playing well. His skills have been growing and getting better with time, it's a good addition because he brings his own style of play which helps the team as a whole to move and gel well so that we can continue doing our best out there.

He should just play his heart out because there is nothing difficult out there, if you put in the hard work, everything is going to be okay at the end of the day,” Omondi told Daystar RFC’s media team.

The versatile Wabwire who can play centre, wing or fullback in 15s has been in impeccable form for Daystar for both their 7s and 15s team as he scored eight tries, helping the side clinch the Prinsloo 7s division II trophy and will be the first player from the University to play for Shujaa while still in their books.

Omondi also shared a word of encouragement for Daystar Falcons who are currently fourth in the Championship after five rounds of matches.

“The Falcons family will always be my family, my message to them is that they should continue with the good work because they are currently playing in the Championship and so far they are doing very well.

If they can continue with whatever they are doing, they are going to take the club further than where we left it when we were there,” added Omondi.
