The centre will lead the side for the first time this Saturday as they play Blak Blad at KCB Sports Club
Felix Otieno has been confirmed as Mwamba Rugby Club’s captain for the 2021/22 Kenya Cup season, the club’s technical bench has announced.
Otieno, fondly known as Top Dog, has been donning the armband since the start of the season as a new look Kulabu battles to find their footing in the league in what has been an underwhelming start to the season as they currently sit in the second last relegation position having collected only one point from the opening four games.
Edwin Waita, the club’s Director of Rugby, confirmed the appointment as he pointed out that the centre’s commitment and leadership qualities are what made him stand out for the role.
“Top Dog has been with the club for almost ten years, coming through the ranks. His commitment to the club is unmatched and he has shown tremendous leadership qualities both on and off the pitch. He deserves this role,” he is quoted on the club’s website.

Despite currently enduring a rough patch on the field, the hard-running centre, while expressing his delight at the opportunity, remained optimistic that he could take Kulabu back to the top ‘where it belongs.’
“This is an absolute honour for me to be named the captain of this great club. I am ready to rally my troops and lead them on the pitch as well as off the pitch. I want to thank the management for this privilege as well as the fans for their immensely undying support. Together we shall take Kulabu where it belongs,” he said.

Otieno has been playing in the unfamiliar Number 8 position in the absence of the dependable Tonny Owuor. He however adapted well to the new role as he scored twice in three matches. With Owuor back to the team, Otieno will shift back to his preferred position in the midfield.
Top Dog will be deputized by half back Charles Chege with a rotating pack leader. Kelvin Juma will be the other assistant for their weekend’s game against Blak Blad that is set to be staged at KCB Sports Club starting from 1.00pm.
