Falcons managed a late consolation, but Strathmore’s pace and efficiency proved too much.
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) made history on Sunday, 24 August, by booking their first-ever semifinal spot in the 2025 National 7s Circuit after edging Nakuru RFC 21-19 in a tense quarterfinal clash at the ASK Njukiri Showground, Embu.
The university side had to dig deep after Nakuru opened the scoring through Chrissant Ojwang, whose unconverted try gave Wanyore the early lead.

MMUST thought they had pulled level when Veron Kaburu raced clear, but the referee ruled it out after consultation, and the students were further pegged back with a sin bin.
Despite the setback, MMUST clawed back into the contest. Clarence Onyango touched down, with Kaburu converting to give them the advantage. Bevon Okoth extended the lead before another quickfire try, both converted by Kaburu, swung the tie in MMUST’s favour.
Nakuru responded through a brilliant combination, Felix Okoth setting up his brother Mboya for a try, before Okoth himself went over, with the conversion making it all square.
A late infringement by MMUST gave Nakuru a chance to snatch it, but their penalty attempt went wide in front of the posts.
The game went into extra time, where MMUST held their nerve to seal a dramatic 21-19 victory and book their maiden semifinal berth in the 2025 Circuit.
Kabras out of main cup contention
Elsewhere, defending champions KCB displayed their title credentials with a commanding 21-5 win over Kabras Sugar in the first quarterfinal.
Floyd Wabwire was the architect, setting up Samuel Asati for the opener before scoring one himself. Brian Wahinya was flawless from the tee, seeing the bankers lead 14-0 at the break.
Kabras pulled one back through Brian Mutua from a scrum, but costly handling errors and a mispass gifted KCB another chance, which Wabwire punished with a spectacular solo effort.
Despite finishing with six men after Bob Muhati’s yellow card, KCB’s defence stood tall to book a semifinal spot, sending Kabras to the fifth-place playoffs.
Strathmore Leos edge stubborn Daystar Falcons
Strathmore Leos were equally ruthless against Daystar Falcons, running in five tries in a dominant 29-5 victory.
Victor Mola set the tone with a brace, while Arnold Mwita and Elton Amalemba also crossed over, Brian Mwendwa adding the only successful conversion.
Falcons managed a late consolation, but Strathmore’s pace and efficiency proved too much.
Menengai Oilers too strong for Harlequin
In the final quarterfinal, Menengai Oilers outmuscled Kenya Harlequin 19-14.
Quins struck first through Ramadhan Masete, with Collins converting, but Oilers responded through Brian Achacha and Daniel Kipchirchir to take a 12-7 halftime lead.
Alvin Khavoli added a second-half try for Oilers, converted by Philip Okeyo, before Leon Nyang scored late for Quins to set up a nervy finish. Oilers, however, held on to progress to the last four.
The semifinals will now see KCB clash with MMUST, while Strathmore Leos face Menengai Oilers.
