The Kenya Sevens speedster is set to feature in the inaugural Rugby Premier League (RPL), the world’s first franchise-based rugby sevens tournament set to debut in India.

The 22-year-old speedster has been drafted by Red Delhi, one of the six city-based franchises, for the tournament that will run from Sunday, 1 to Sunday, 15 June at the Mumbai Football Arena.

Odongo joins a roster of 30 marquee international players, rubbing shoulders with some of rugby’s biggest legends and current stars.

Among those gracing the tournament are USA’s Perry Baker, South Africa’s Rosko Specman, and New Zealand’s Scott Curry, all of whom are coming out of retirement to be part of this groundbreaking league.

Also in the mix are Argentina’s Luciano Gonzalez and Akuila Rokolisoa of the All-Blacks Sevens, further showing the league’s elite calibre.

Mozzart Sport chatted with Daystar University’s Sports Director, Maurice Masiga, who noted that Odongo’s selection is a massive milestone not only for him, but also for Kenyan rugby and the institution.

“I feel very good, especially my Vice Chancellor, who is very elated for what Odongo is doing. We are doing everything possible to make sure that our boys are comfortable,” Masiga shared.

On how he balances his studies with the intense demands off the pitch, Masiga remained confident of Odongo’s maturity to handle the two.

“Odongo is mature enough. He plans his time very well. Most of his classes are online, and he can organise with the lecturer and the staff from the school. He is very organised, that is why he is doing very well,” he offered.

Masiga further explained that while the university does not wish to restrict Odongo’s ambitions, they are more than happy to continue supporting him as he grows both academically and on the pitch.

“We do not have to maintain him or have him stay. If he feels that he needs to go to another club. But we would be glad to keep him in Daystar because he is an inspiration to the younger guys.

Because he is doing great, we wish him to progress even more. We are telling him to concentrate on his studies, and he can go play elsewhere after he graduates,” he concluded.

Daystar Vice Chancellor Prof. Laban Ayiro also showered praise on the spirited winger, stating that the entire university community is behind him.

“As both the Vice Chancellor and a mentor, I take immense pride in celebrating Patrick Odongo, who has made history as the only Kenyan selected to participate in the inaugural Rugby Premier League,” Ayiro said.

“You will be competing alongside global rugby icons such as Perry Baker and Rosko Specman. The entire Daystar University community and Daystar Falcons Rugby stand proudly behind you.

We remain steadfast in our support and wish you resounding success on this global stage. You have my blessings.”

The Rugby Premier League, sanctioned by World Rugby, is set to bring fresh energy to the global sevens calendar.

The six franchises, Bengaluru Bravehearts, Chennai Bulls, Delhi Redz, Hyderabad Heroes, Kalinga Black Tigers, and Mumbai Dreamers, will field some of the finest talent from powerhouse nations, including South Africa, Great Britain, Fiji, Australia, and Kenya.
