Kenya open their tournament with a clash against Uganda on Friday.
After landing a favourable draw in the Commonwealth Games, the national men's 7s head coach, Damian McGrath has revealed that they have set their eyes on a place in the quarter finals of the tournament.
Shujaa were Pooled against heavyweights Australia, minnows Jamaica and sworn enemies Uganda who pulled a massive surprise in the Africa 7s to knock out Shujaa in the semis.
McGrath who was appointed back in May to take over the reins from Innocent 'Namcos' Simiyu credited the Strength and Conditioning coach Geoffrey Kimani for getting the boys in shape as he opened up on their quarter final target.
"We are in better shape than we were before thanks to coach Kimani, players have worked hard on their skills and they now understand the game better and we feel we are in a good place for the start of the competition.
The players have set a target of getting to the knockout stages and from there you need to win one game and you have a chance of winning a medal but the first target is to get through Friday and qualify for the knockouts," said McGrath.
Shujaa will however need to turn their fortunes around after posting torrid results in the World Rugby Sevens Series where they lost their last seven games with the last defeat coming against Japan.
Having lost to Uganda in the Africa Cup, McGrath noted that they have a score to settle against Uganda but emphasized on treating every game in the tournament as a cup final.
"We have got a payback for being beaten in the Africa Cup before I arrived, we are hopping the conditions won't be as bad as they were when I watched the game on tape, we hope it will be bit drier,
We have to be confident because we are a world series side against Uganda and Jamaica, it would be a major surprise if we didn't win but we can't be over confident, we have to treat each game as a World Cup final," added McGrath.Kenya
