Blak Blad name new skipper ahead of 2023/2024 Kenya Cup season

They are scheduled to kickstart the 2023/2024 Kenya Cup season away to Mwamba RFC.

Kenyatta University's rugby team; Blak Blad RFC have announced their new captain and his assistants ahead of the upcoming 2023/24 Kenya Cup season set to kick off on November 25 in different venues across the country.

Backrower Kuke Ernest Obat has been handed the captaincy role replacing Ian Obukwa who led the club in the previous seasons. Kuke will be assisted by; Claude Kennedy Nyamiro and winger Shuaib Saleh Wesonga.

Kuke will be in charge of the overall team's activities, while Wesonga is responsible for discipline in the team. Youngster Nyamiro, who is a first year at the institution has been tasked with transition in the team.

The captains are tasked with elevating the team to greater heights in the Kenya Cup with the club targeting to better last season’s performance.

The Thika Road-based team ended their 2022/23 campaign at position five 32 points and with an inferior points differential of -34 having scored 218 points and conceded 252.

Speaking on the newest development, Blak Blad RFC head coach Benard Rotich praised the capability of the new captains.

The skippers passed through a selection panel before they were vetted and interviewed on their abilities before making the cut.

"They are disciplined, professional, committed and they understand the cultures of the club. Wesonga will be in charge of discipline while Nyamiro will spearhead transition in the club," Rotich offered.

The gaffer further noted that the students are busy sharpening claws ahead of the much-anticipated Kenya Cup season. He affirmed that his charges were looking to surpass expectations in the upcoming top-tier league.

"We are doing our best. We are training and polishing our setpieces, and we are raring to go," he assured.

If their performance in the 2023 Impala Floodlights is anything to go by, the students could be on the right track to excellence.

They defied all the odds to the semifinal stage where they narrowly went down 20-14 to Nondies RFC.

They have also played friendlies with neighboring clubs, defeating Zetech University 18-8, Homeboyz RFC 10-5, and suffered a narrow 22-20 defeat at the hands of Daystar Falcons.
