His experience continues to shape Mwamba’s transition into a competitive sevens outfit
Mwamba RFC coach Lavin Asego is convinced that his side has taken valuable lessons from their performance at the Ruff n Tuff 7s as they prepare for the 2025 National 7s Circuit, which kicks off with the Driftwood 7s in Mombasa on Saturday, 26 to Sunday, 27 July.
Mwamba finished as runners-up at the tournament, which served as a curtain raiser for the National 7s Circuit.
It was held on Saturday, 12 July at the Ngong Racecourse.
They started strong with two convincing pool wins, beating USIU Martials 26-12 and Impala 28-10, before suffering a 37-0 defeat to hosts Nondies RFC in their final group match.
In the semifinals, Mwamba edged past Kenya Harlequin 17-14 in a closely fought match to reach the final, where they went down 21-5 to a sharp Strathmore Leos side.
Despite the defeat, the Kenya Sevens legend commended his players for their effort and growth throughout the competition.
“We have not had much time together, but I’m very proud of the boys for what they have done. Coming second against a Kenya Cup side is no small feat,” he revealed.
However, he was quick to point out that there are key areas that must be addressed before the national circuit begins, especially on the defensive front.
“Our biggest undoing was our defense. The boys know how to play, but defense is a team pattern. It needs coordination. We will work on that because I know these boys can run,” he explained.
Asego also emphasized the need for improved player fitness, noting that a few individuals will need extra conditioning ahead of Driftwood 7s.
“Some boys need to step up their fitness, and we will work with them over the next few weeks,” he averred.
The squad that featured in the tournament is likely to form the backbone of Mwamba’s team for the upcoming circuit, although changes are expected depending on injuries and availability.
“This is largely the group we are moving forward with. We have a larger training squad of 25, and there may be one or two additions. A few players are recovering from concussions, and with the minimum return-to-play period being two weeks, they will not make it for Driftwood but should be back for Prinsloo,” he said.
Asego’s experience continues to shape Mwamba’s transition into a competitive sevens outfit.
He made history as the first Kenyan to score 1000 points for Kenya in the World Series.
He has 1026 points for Kenya and is joined only by Collins Injera in the highly exclusive 1000-point club.
