Shujaa have had significant improvement over the past two years
A historic return to the HSBC SVNS, an Olympic berth, Safari Sevens triumph, a ninth-place finish at the Olympics, and significant wins over arch-rivals South Africa and Germany have characterized Shujaa’s past two years.
The team, which was relegated in May 2023, has been in a rebuilding phase that saw it acquire new management and fresh blood.
Kevin Wambua was appointed Shujaa’s head coach on Friday 4 August 2023, replacing Damian McGrath, who had a rather unceremonious 14-month stay in the office.
When Wambua took over, few gave him and his young team a chance of winning so soon, let alone qualifying for the Paris Olympics or even the unimaginable HSBC SVNS return.
Together with the new technical bench, they were given only four months to prepare the team.
The tactician inherited a team that had lost some of the brightest stars like Collins Injera, William Ambaka and Billy Odhiambo to retirement.
His first assignment was the Africa Cup, and he picked a young squad, recalling only three seasoned players—Vincent Onyala, Anthony Omondi and Herman Humwa—to the squad.
Patrick Odongo (Daystar), Samuel 'TinTin' Asati (KCB) and Nigel Amaitsa (Strathmore Leos) were some of the new players in the team.
Despite that, Wambua led the team to Paris 2024 Olympics qualification after defeating favourites South Africa 17-12 in the final of the Rugby Africa Men’s Cup-cum-Olympics qualifiers.
As if not enough, Shujaa roared back to the HSBC SVNS on Sunday 2 June after a triumphant 33-15 win over Germany in the promotion qualifier playoff match played in Madrid, Spain.
Now, the 2024/25 season kicks off with the Emirates Dubai Sevens from Saturday 30 November to Sunday 1 December, at The Sevens Stadium.
As the team prepares for this prestigious event, one of the key requirements for success is significant investment.
This will enable the team to secure enough international friendly matches, ensure adequate time in camp, and provide ample opportunities to sharpen the skills of the feeder team, the Morans, who are poised to bring a competitive edge to the national squad.
Congratulations, Shujaa! @KenyaSevens has become the Rugby Africa Sevens Champions by defeating South Africa 17-12, securing a spot in the 2024 Olympics Games in Paris.

Mozzart Sport looks at reasons why more sponsors and financiers should invest in Kenya Sevens despite already having a betting firm as their front shirt sponsor.
1. Global Exposure and Brand Visibility
Shujaa’s participation in the HSBC SVNS provides unparalleled global exposure for sponsors.
The series is the most prestigious rugby sevens tournament, attracting millions of viewers from around the world.
By aligning with Shujaa, sponsors can capitalize on this extensive visibility, reaching diverse audiences across multiple markets.
2. Strong Fan Base and National Support
Kenya's rugby community is passionate and dedicated, with Shujaa commanding a strong following both locally and internationally.
During the Olympics, it was easy to tell that most of the fans were rallying behind Team Kenya, as they would even shout the names of the players from the stands.
The team's success on the pitch has fostered a deep sense of pride and connection among fans, making them one of the most beloved sports teams in the country.
This loyal fan base translates into high engagement levels, providing sponsors with a captive audience that is likely to support brands associated with their favourite team.
The ripple effect of this support can lead to increased brand loyalty and consumer trust.
3. Inspirational Success Story
Shujaa’s journey from underdogs to global contenders is an inspirational success story that resonates with audiences far beyond the rugby field.
Their perseverance, hard work, and never-give-up attitude embody values that any brand would be proud to be associated with.
By sponsoring the team, companies can align themselves with these positive attributes, enhancing their brand image and demonstrating a commitment to supporting talent and excellence.
4. Youth Development and Grassroots Impact
Investing in Shujaa is not just about supporting a successful team; it's about contributing to the growth and development of rugby in Kenya.
The national team's success has inspired countless young players to pursue the sport, leading to a surge in grassroots participation.
Sponsors have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by supporting initiatives that nurture young talent and provide pathways for the next generation of rugby stars.
5. Proven Track Record and Future Potential
Shujaa has consistently performed at the highest level, winning tournaments and earning respect from rugby powerhouses.
Their historic victory at the Singapore Sevens in 2016, where they defeated Fiji to claim their first-ever World Series leg title, showcased their potential and placed them firmly on the global rugby map.
With continued support, Shujaa has the potential to achieve even greater heights, making it an exciting time for sponsors to get involved and be part of their journey to success.
