KRU say decision occasioned by unavoidable circumstances.

The 25th edition of the annual Safari Sevens tournament that was penciled to take place from 14-16 October 2022 at the RFUEA Grounds along Ngong road will not take place as earlier planned.

This is after the country’s rugby governing body, Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) announced that it was forced to postpone the event due to ‘unavoidable circumstances’.

“The Kenya Rugby Union has today confirmed the postponement of the 25th edition of the Safari Sevens originally set for 14th -16th October 2022 at the RFUEA Ground. The decision to postpone the event has been occasioned by unavoidable circumstances,” KRU wrote in a statement.

This year, the tournament was set to make its return to the home of Kenya Rugby Union at the RFUEA Grounds but those plans will have to be shelved after the latest communication.

“A new tournament date will be announced in a future communication. We take this opportunity to thank our loyal fans and partners for your continued support,” the statement added.

The men’s national 7s side, Shujaa were set to defend their title after defeating Germany 12-5 in the 2021 edition held at Nyayo National Stadium.

Earlier, the chairman of the 2022 tournament had revealed that twelve men’s teams would take part in the competition with six women sides also anticipated to feature in the tourney open to international representative sides, professional and amateur clubs, invitational teams, university and school teams.

Uganda, who finished fifth last year, had already confirmed their participation in the now postponed edition.

KRU are expected to announce the new dates of the tournament in future.
