Young City relish first KHF league win

The team takes a break after 12 matches and will not be involved in this weekend's action

Coach Fred Omole says his side, Young City, has shown tremendous growth in the lead up to their first victory in the Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) men's league. 

The Nairobi-based club comprising of hearing impared players drawn from the national team joined the league this season as part of their build up for any upcoming international duty. 

Having gone winless since them, Omole's charges broke the duck this weekend when they played University of Eldoret (UoE) at the Nyayo Handball Court picking a 34-27 win. 

"When we joined the league it was mainly for the players' exposure as they do not have a league of their own. However, there has been notable improvement and this win is a huge morale booster for the squad. 

The frequency of play has given the team the much-needed exposure. They have been applying everything we are teaching them.in training and finally it has paid off. 

I believe this win will go a long way in improving their mental strength and self confidence that they can actually pick wins in this league," offered the tactician. 

The side is now ranked 16 in the 19-team league log at two points from 12 matches with Spartans, Boomerang and Technical University of Kenya (TUK) the only winless sides so far occupying the last three places. 

After the weekend's action, holders National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) are still at the helm tied on points with Ulinzi HC after an 11-match winning streak. The defending champions, however, hold a superior goal difference. 

In third-place is Black Mamba who picked a 48-20 win on Sunday against newbies Spartans to maintain third place on 18 points from ten matches, having lost one so far. 

Meanwhile, General Service Unit (GSU) suffered their second loss of the season in a shock 27-26 outcome against Kenyatta University (K.U) and are fifth on the log behind Strathmore University who have also lost twice in ten appearances.
