Lakers are chasing a second-place finish in the Kenya Hockey Union League
In a match they should and needed to win, Lakers Hockey Club settled for a frustrating barren draw against Blazers at Simba Club, Kisumu on Saturday afternoon.
Lakers, who are chasing a second place finish in the table standings to qualify for their maiden Women's Africa Cup of Clubs, were profligate in front of goal, missing countless scoring chances including a flick in the last quarter.
"There's no match we've had more chances to score in this league than this one, I'm gutted," Lakers coach Austin Tuju, who arrived for the match after the first quarter, told Mozzart Sport after the game.
"It's due to poor reflexes, and this is because to inadequate training. We only train a few days in a week before a match because of lack of funds," Tuju added.
He explained that his lateness was due to a family function he had to attend first before making his way to Simba, "it was a one-off event I couldn't miss."
The Lakers skipper Alice Awiti, who missed an important flick, blamed bad luck; "We never win matches at Simba Club, we even wanted the game to be shifted to the Kisumu Day grounds."
Up next for the team is a game against Wolverines on Sunday 20th November at the Kisumu Day grounds from 1PM EAT.
Blazers captain Nancy Nungari credited their experience for the result, which ensured they bagged four points from the Lakers this season.
"They (Lakers) are a youthful side, but we're experienced, that's how we managed to stop them on their tracks."
Against the Wolverines, the Lakers must record a win and pray that the Blazers tumble in their remaining two games for them to finish second and secure a ticket to continental hockey. The draw pushes them to 18 points, one point against Blazers, who have played a game less.
