Bitok will have about a week to access her level before naming his final squad on April 25

Having arrived in the country on Wednesday, 14 April from her base in Seychelles where she turns out for Anse Royale (ARSU), Jane Wacu finally had a chance to join her national women’s volleyball, Malkia Strikers, teammates for training on Monday, 19 April.

Malkia strikers have been in a bio-secure bubble training camp at Kenyatta University and Kasarani Indoor Arena since March 23 as they prepare for the July 23 to August 8 Tokyo Olympics.

Head coach Paul Bitok had named a 20-man squad that included Wacu but only 18 reported to camp in March as budding setter Esther Mutinda chose to stay out citing medical reasons. With Wacu joining the squad today, Bitok will have about a week to access her level before deciding on whether she will mnake the team that leaves for Brazil on May 1.

“Wacu had to undergo Covid-19 testing, upon her arrival last week, and after getting her results she joined the rest in camp and we had our first training session with her on Monday. I intend to name the 14 players who will travel with the team to Brazil on April 25 and she will have to prove herself between now and then. She is going through the same scrutiny as the other players before we can name a final squad,” expressed Bitok.

Malkia Strikers, have made do with two setters in Kenya Prisons’ Joy Lusenaka and youngster Emmaculate Nekesa of Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) and Wacu will fight for a place in the team against the two.

Wacu joins the team at a time when the current technical bench led by Bitok and his two assistants Josp Barasa and Japheth Munala have received a timely boost after the arrival of International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) attached tacticians.

The four are in Kenya for a 10-day scouting visit to assess Malkia Strikers, and then head back to Brazil to prepare for the arrival of the team in Brazil for a 6-weeks high performance training bubble camp.

All expenses for the 6-weeks training in Brazil have been met by the FIVB and the team is set to benefit from the expertise and experience of the four top coaches from a country that constantly produces world beaters in both men and women each year.
