The varsity women have their work cut out as they face league favourites in remaining first leg fixtures.
As the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) leagues go on a week-long break, University of Nairobi Dynamites have their work cut out when action returns as they face two of their toughest challengers in the league.
The Juma Kent-coached side has played four matches, winning three and raked in maximum points from two walkovers against Eagle Wings and Storms. When the league resumes next weekend, the varsity side will have a date with holders Equity Hawks, losing finalists Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and promoted Lady Bucks.
The side lost 50-47 to Zetech University before the league was suspended in March. They have since picked wins against Kenyatta University Oryx, Strathmore Swords and Africa Nazarene University (ANU).
During their last match against ANU played on Saturday, 10 July, Winnie Chebet and Liz Okumu who was returning for club duty after training with the national team currently in Rwanda for the Africa Zone Five qualifiers but didn't make the final team, led the onslaught, scoring eleven and ten points respectively. Dynamites won theatch 52-43.
"So far, the squad is doing well considering we are rebuilding following the exit of some key players at the start of the season. The young player are proving themselves with each win and that has given them some confidence going into the tougher assignment. They ate getting better with each match as witnessed in the ANU win. They stayed level headed even under pressure," offered Kent.
Dynamites will be hoping to cause an upset when they take on the two league favourites. Kent's charges are also looking to replicate their 2019 league run where they went on to play I'm the the playoff semis on their league debut.
"We know the task ahead is tough and demanding especially against the two champions but we will take it one match at a time. Normally I lose due to their post players and the fact that their players are more experienced so we are working on how to beat that," the tactician added.
