Top seeds dominate first round of 2023 Kenya National Youth and Cadet Chess Championship

The Kenya National Youth and Cadet Chess Championship began today at Kisii High School, with all top seeds in all categories winning their matches

The 2023 finals of the Kenya National Youth and Cadet Chess Championship got off to a startearlier today at Kisii High School with round one having no upsets all top seeds in all categories winning.

Top seeds and in the under 8 open and girls sections Nathaniel Manyeki and Ariela Telo respectively winning and so did Ram Yashmith and Winnie Kaburo in under 10 open and under 10 girls. Abel Taji and 2021 African School Individual Chess Championship silver medalist Elizabeth Cassidy Maina in under 11 girls maintain their top seed status in under 12 open and under 12 girls respectively.

Paul Olando and Angel Kagambi hold the fort in the under 14 sections, Jamie Kanango and Devashri Shah in the under 16 sections while Rocky Muchiri and 2021 African School Individual Chess Championship bronze medalist Bernice Gikandi in the under 18 sections.

The 8-round event has attracted a total of 3,117 participants from all over Kenya making it the largest ever single chess gathering in Kenya and Africa. It will be a great opportunity for rural based players to pit their skills against 36 of those exposed internationally who have FIDE ratings. There will be three rounds today, tomorrow and two on the final day.

Winners in each section will be declared national champions in their respective age categories being 12 in all.
