The African competition is serving as a qualifier for the global Championships set for Adelaide, Australia, from 14 to 23 November.
Under coaches Patrick Owino and Salome Wanjala, Kenya heads to the competition banking on a mix of youth and experience, looking to reach at the very least, the semis, as the top four teams in each gender category will qualify for the Adelaide showpiece.
The men's team is headlined by the experienced Brian Melly who is keen to make amends. He is joined by Rwandese league MVP Elphas Makuto, Equity's Wilson Cheruiyot with Prison's Jairus Kipkosgei completing the two pairs.
"We have trained well and feel ready for the championship. Last time our we came short but we are confident of qualification this time," Melly offered.
In the women's team, Olympian Gaudencia Makokha's experience and that of Malkia Strikers' Veronica Adhiambo will play a huge role in Kenya's chase for a place in Adelaide. Mercy Iminza and Sharlene Maiywa also made the team.
"We have had good preparations, albeit for a short period. We feel confident in both our abilities and in our chemistry as a team. Beach volleyball is unique and one needs to believe in their partners for them to play well, which will be key for us in Morocco. We are not looking at what other countries are doing, but in our abilities. I believe we will be the best," KCB's Maiywa offered.
Morocco’s Martil City will host the double gender event with Bouchra Hajij, president of the African Volleyball Confederation, announcing that the tournament will feature record-breaking participation, with 88 female athletes from 19 African countries and 144 male athletes from 27 countries competing.
