Cade Cunningham got his name in the NBA history books for breaking a record that had stood since 1967

Cade Cunningham delivered one of the most bizarre masterpieces in NBA league history - 46 points, a triple-double, and a mountain of missed shots - as the Detroit Pistons edged the Washington Wizards 137-135 in overtime.

The Pistons star put up 45 shots, the most by any player this season, making just 14 of them! His 31 misses are the most by anyone since the NBA-ABA merger in 1976. Not even the great Rick Barry, who went 17-for-50 back in 1967, had seen a night quite like this in over half a century.

Despite the inefficiency, Cunningham stuffed the stat sheet: 46 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists and 5 steals - his 12th career triple-double and his second 40-point one, matching the legendary Isiah Thomas.

Cunningham's 31.1% shooting ranks as the second-worst ever in a 45-point performance in league history - only James Harden's 20.7% outing in 2019 was worse. Still, he willed the Pistons to their seventh straight win, keeping them atop the Eastern Conference at 9-2.

He hit just 2 of 11 from three, but went 16-of-18 from the line, attacking relentlessly until the very end.

Daniss Jenkins drilled a clutch three-pointer to force overtime and finished with 24 points, while Jalen Duren added 19 points and 14 rebounds for a Detroit side that continues to find ways to win, even when their star can't stop shooting.
