Kenya was suspended indefinitely by FINA in April this year after failing to conduct elections in the last two years despite passing a new constitution last year.
Kenya Swimming Federation (KSF) stabilization committee, headed by South African Jace Naidoo has recommended that the national federation holds its elections by December 2022.
Global swimming body FINA led by Vice President, CANA President, and IOC Member Ramsamy Sambasivan, held a meeting with stakeholders, in an attempt to reach an amicable solution to the standoff.
KSF was first suspended by FINA in 2019 pending new elections in compliance with international rules. Three years later, in May of 2022, the federation was banned indefinitely after failing to meet two deadlines for elections.
The sanctions have kept Kenyan athletes from competing under their home nation’s flag while also preventing officials from participating in the FINA Congress and other non-sporting events. A stabilization committee was formed in July
The mandate of the stabilization committee was to, among other functions, manage the daily affairs of the federation and organise and conduct elections.
From the meeting, the committee fronted its considerations in an attempt to reach a consensus and help Kenya return to local, regional, and international events.
Part of their recommendation was to have a General Assembly to approve the Constitution and Elect a new KSF Executive by December 2022.
Addressing the Stakeholders, NOC-K Secretary General Francis Mutuku who is a Member of the Committee, noted the urgency to have the ban on Swimming activities in Kenya lifted.
"The Stabilization Committee was established with the goal of bringing together all Swimming Stakeholders. It is important to lay aside differences within the federation and seek a solution that will see the resumption of normalcy in the Swimming fraternity," offered Mutuku.
Moses Mwase, Secretary to the Stabilization Committee, stressed the athlete-centered approach to strengthening Swimming activities in Kenya.
