Sports enjoy increased allocation in proposed budget

As the proposed total programmed spending for the FY 2022/23 increased to Ksh 3.3 trillion from Ksh 3.03 trillion last year, the proposed allocation for sports as well as that for renovation and refurbishment of regional stadia also increased.

The Treasury on Thursday proposed the allocation of KSh15.8 billion to the Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund for the upcoming financial year 2022/2023, according to Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury and Planning, Ukur Yatani.

This was an upward revision by Ksh 0.8 billion, a 5.3 per cent increase, from the preceding FY 2021/2022 which saw Ksh 15.0 billion allocated.

Last year, The Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund enjoyed another big increase of 7.1 per cent from the 2020/2021 FY, from KSh 14 billion to Ksh 15 billion.

In addition to the proposed increase in the Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund, the CS further proposed a huge increase in the allocation for the refurbishment of regional stadiums by 38.8 per cent, from KSh90 million in 2021/2022 FY to KSh125 million for the 2022/2023 Financial Year.


Among the regional stadiums that have been under construction or renovations recently include Kamariny Stadium in Elgeyo Marakwet, Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Uasin Gishu, Ruring’u Stadium in Nyeri, and Wote Stadium in Makueni.

Kinoru Stadium in Meru has also been under renovation and is in its final stages of refurbishment.
