Both KPA and Equity Dumas are expected to represent Kenya
Newly-created FIBA East Africa Basketball Champions Cup—Zone Five, a men's competition domiciled in, has attracted six teams for its inaugural season set to be hosted in Nairobi.
Sources close to the organisers have revealed that the competition has been introduced by Hesham El Hariri, the president of the Zone, to give teams that don't qualify for the prestigious Road to Basketball Africa League (BAL) an opportunity to play quality international matches.
A list seen by Mozzart Sport has home teams Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Equity Bank Dumas headlining, with four others—Dar City Basketball from Tanzania, ABC, Les Hippos BBC, and Remesha Club from Burundi—set to feature.
Plans have been underway for the competition for some time now with everything coming together after the Road to BAL East Division Group Phase matches got underway in Tanzania and Zimbabwe.
Nairobi gets to host, barely a fortnight after welcoming top eight teams for the BAL Elite 16, the last qualifying stage for the premier African men's club competition now in its fifth edition.
Home side Nairobi City Thunder and Cape Verde's Kriol Star made history for their respective countries, becoming the first sides to make BAL in their first time of asking. The latter has been in operation for less than a year.
