Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) women's league champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) lived up to expectations as they got their title defense off to a flying start in the playoffs.
Up against Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) Lynx in Game One of the best-of-three quarters, tge Antony Ojukwu-coached dockers played for an easy 96-24 victory.
Forward Selina Okumu led the scoring with 19 for the dockers who made sure to finish the job in the first quarter by scoring 40 points while restricting the varsity side to six. The rest of the quarters looked like a training session for the champions.
Rebecca Nkatha added 17 to the tally with Nigerian import Ifunaya Okoro sinking 15 to complete the list of KPA players who managed double digits in the match.
"This was an easy match, with due respect to Lynx. After the first two quarter (40-06, 27-06) we took a different approach and stopped the fast breaks to concentrate on trying out different plays that we have been working on.
This was an opportunity to check how well we can execute on those plays with an opponent in toe and I am impressed with the performance," offered coach Ojukwu after the match.
The second half of the game saw the dockers go easy on the baskets scoring 16-05 and 13-07 for the win.
"As we head back to camp to prepare for Game Two, tye focus remains on perfecting our plays for the coming matches. I am confident in my squad sailing through to the final and defending the title l, but we have to play well while at it," he added.
JKUAT are scheduled to travel to Mombasa for Game Two slated for Saturday 29 April, with the hosts expected to complete the sweep.
"I am not particularly happy with the team's percentages on the free throw line. We shot below par and that has to change. It will be one of the areas we will be working on as we go back to camp," Ojukwu lamented
