Elite amateur golfer itching to make a mark in the next European Tour events hosted in the country.

Royal Nairobi's elite amateur golfer Jay Sandhu will be lining up for the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series set to resume this weekend after the Covid-19 occasioned break.

Sandhu was one of the amateur golfers who got the chance to play at the two European Tour events, Magical Kenya Open and Savannah Classic, in March , having qualified after winning the StrokePlay championship in October last year.

The 39-year old says he will begin his preparations early, through the KAGC series,as he looks to qualify and better his performance at the next European Tour events.

"My experience at the two global events was good and I would want to go back and improve on this year's performance. It was a great learning experience playing against some of the best golfers. Before this year's Open and Savannah I was not playing much golf and I was rusty, especially at the MatchPlay and StrokePlay championships. This year I have played more, but for the break we had to take, and I intend to continue as that would help me prepare better," said Sandhu adding that he will likely skip the Railways Invitational if it held this weekend and prepare for the next KAGC event.

Golf course have been closed for competition since the government’s directive for all sporting activities to be suspended. Kenya Golf Union (KGU) gave their guidelines on resumption last week.

The federation has directed that all golf clubs must ensure they conduct screenings and any persons displaying high temperatures or any other Covid-19 symptoms to be handled as prescribed in the Ministry of Health guidelines. Clubs are also encouraged to test their members, staff and caddies as well as keep a record of persons accessing their premises for contact tracing.

"We are in consultation with the clubs who organize these events and the next event should be the Railways invitational on the first weekend of June. The Railway event was scheduled for the last weekend of May but it will not be possible to host it on such short notice,” explained KGU’s Vincent Wang’ombe adding that Trans-Nzoia championship that was scheduled for June 5 has since been pushed forward.
