Police settled for silver in the 2016 edition held in Nairobi
The Africa Cup for Club Champions is set to get underway on Monday in Nairobi with Kenyan teams looking to take full advantage of home advantage and win ensure the titles remain around.
Kenya is set to be represented by recently crowned hockey champions Butali Warriors and Strathmore University Scorpions with runners up Kenya Police and Blazers also securing slots.
Ahead of the tournament, Police captain Victor Wanyama is calling on Kenyans from all walks of life to spare time from their schedules and make to the facilities where the Kenyan teams will be playing with an aim of backing them.
The tournament is set to be held in three facilities namely; the City Park Stadium, the Mpesa Foundation grounds and the Sikh Union Stadium.
Wanyama, particularly asked the Kenya Police Football Club supporters to bring their energy to the stadium and prop up the hockey team in the bid to win the continental crown.
The Police football team has been commanding decent following in recent days courtesy of the revitalization the club has experienced under coach Francis Baraza.
The skipper who admitted to have been watching the Police football team play also reached out to their players to come support them whenever they are free.
"I ask all the hockey fans to turn up in large numbers and cheer us as we aim to deliver gold. I also plead with the Police football team fans and all Kenyans to back us and the rest of local teams in the tournament," he said.
The tournament returns to Nairobi after seven years. Police finished second in the 2016 edition held at City Park, losing 3-2 to Eastern Company of Egypt in the final.
Wanyama believes that the ultimate prize will be theirs to lose this year having picked valuable lessons on how to handle foreign teams in the Gold Cup held last year in Nairobi.
Police beat Ghana's Exchequers to clinch the title.
