The country finished eleventh out of 14 countries after losing 2-0 to Botswana in the positional play off in North Macedonia.
Wimbledon Girls Doubles Grand Slam winner (2022) Angela Okutoyi has stepped up her preparations for the 2023 Billie Jean King Africa Group III tournament, set to take place at the Nairobi Club from 12-17 June 2023.
The 19-year-old is hoping to guide Kenya to Group II promotion as she makes a return to the competition, having missed last year’s Billie Jean King Cup Europe/Africa competition in North Macedonia, as it clashed with her historic run to the Wimbledon Junior Championships in London.

Okutoyi who landed a scholarship to Auburn University last year, joining early 2023, goes to battle alongside Alicia Owegi a student at Alabama University and Okutoyi’s twin sister Roselida Asumwa currently at Cowley College and Mbagathi Road Secondary School student Cynthia Wanjala. Stacy Yego and Zimbabwe-based Melissa Mwakha are the reserve players.
The trio of Asumwa, Wanjala and Owegi finished eleventh out of 14 countries after losing 2-0 to Botswana in the positional play off in North Macedonia.
“This is my third time being in the Billie Jean King Cup and it is going to be a great experience for all of us. I like playing in front of big crowds. I am expecting more than a big crowd and at home, so it's going to feel more special,” Okutoyi told Nation Sport.
The quartet wants to win the 12-team competition and qualify to the Europe/Africa Zone Group II in 2024. The bottom-placed nation in the competition faces relegation.
“I want us to just qualify. That is the main goal and as an individual I want to put a score on the board for my team in the singles. And if I play in the doubles we want clean sheets to win but our main goal is to qualify," she said ahead of the competition.
The competition is being held in Kenya after over 20 years.
