KPA are looking to dethrone Ulinzi Warriors who beat them at the 2019 playoff semis and went on to win the league

Umoja Basketball Team scoring machine Nick Ogol has switched allegiance to Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) where he hopes to get a chance to advance his playing career and play the game at the highest level in the region.

Ogol, a former Maseno University player, joined Umoja in 2016 when the team was still playing in the Division One league and helped them gain promotion to the Premier League.

“While still in the university I had played select games for Kisumu Lakeside in Division One. After leaving school, Umoja became my club and I am proud that we managed to get to the top tier and have maintained our place,” said Ogol in an interview adding that winning the Division One league in 2016 remains his proudest moment with his former club.

When KPA came calling, Ogol saw an opportunity for a different challenge and more exposure and he bid farewell to his Umoja family for a new journey with the Mombasa-based former champions.

“This will be a different experience since I have only played for one team (Umoja) in the league. It is also an opportunity for career growth since KPA is a highly competitive team in Kenya and through them, I will have a chance to play in the region and the continent as well. That will give me exposure to the game of basketball at different stages, something I was yet to experience at Umoja,” offered Ogol.

While Umoja has remained a mid-table team in the league, Ogol has been a stand out player and KPA seeking for his signature cements his status in the local league. Additionally, the accountant by profession had, in 2019, caught the eye of national team sectors where he earned his first call-up.

“It is humbling when my efforts get recognized even by rival teams. The national team call up, for the Afrobasket pre-qualifier camp, was a testament to the work I put in to better my game. Unfortunately, I could not honour it due to work commitments. However, I am looking forward to being able to suit up for the country in the future,” he said adding that a championship is top of his list of what he would love to achieve at KPA.
