Odondo accepts tough task of guiding Titans to safety

Eric Odondo was the star of the match as his side Zetch Titans picked a second win in the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) men’s league, scoring 20 points, 18 from beyond the arc in a 62-58 win over Africa Nazarene University (ANU) Wolfpacks over the weekend.

While it was something to celebrate at a personal level, Odondo knows his side is deep in trouble and they will require more than just a good match to survive relegation.

However, he has accepted the responsibility, alongside the two other senior members that the onus is on them to help pull the team up from the bottom of the log.

“It has been a long season for us but we have to turn it around. We have to do this for ourselves and for our coach. We need four more wins to survive the chop and I am confident we can make it if we play as we did against ANU and maintain our focus.

Our shooting was the turning point for the match against ANU because our shots were dropping and everyone was playing for the win. However, we almost lost it in the final period as the big lead got to our heads and we became complacent so that is something we need to work on,” Odondo offered.

While he says that the team is working as a unit to get batter in each match, he admits that the senior members of the team will need to step up, as they did against Wolfpacks and lead the charge.

“We have three of the members from the squad that got promoted and that means as the senior players, we have to step up and bring the much-needed leadership in the remaining matches,” he added.

The three, Odondo (20), Simon Rapudo (18) and Seth Masibo are the only players that have stuck with the varsity side and coach Job Munene has been forced to rely on new players who have little league experience but see to have caught on.

Whether they can turn the season around remains to be seen with seven matches left to the conclusion of the regular season.
