The growing popularity of masters swimming highlights the sport's appeal to a wider audience and its potential to promote healthy lifestyles among all ages

Eight teams have confirmed their participation in the highly anticipated Kiambu Masters Swimming Championships set to take place on Saturday 9 December at Potterhouse School, Runda.

The event, one expected to draw the attention of approximately 150 master swimmers from 25 teams, has already seen teams including: The Harpoons Swim Club, Braeburn, Potterhouse, Supermalins, Genesis Sports, USIU Staff, Seahorses Aquatics and Peponi School already submit their entries.

With masters swimming witnessing a surge in popularity across the country, it is expected that more teams will register for the tournament also acting as a reinforcer to recent age category (25 years and above) successful galas.

Among the events that have brought up impressive attendances have been the Nairobi County Aquatics Association NCAA Level 3 Swimming Championships, and the Kenya Inter-Bank Swimming Championships.

Top of it all was last month’s Africa Aquatics Zone Three Swimming Championships in Kigali, Rwanda that saw the duo of President of Kenya Aquatics Dr. Maureen Owiti and seasoned Karen swim coach Nasser Motha bag medals in the masters category.

The latter, a Kenyan swimming legend vying for participation in the World Aquatics Masters Swimming Championship next year, is among the prominent personalities who have confirmed their attendance.

Masters swimming development aligns with Kenya Aquatics’ initiatives and key goals, and apart from the competition it provides, it is promoting healthy lifestyles and encouraging senior swimmers to return to the pool and promote the sport.

Apart from hosting similar events, the federation has also announced plans to host a national masters championship next year, and is in the process of establishing a national database for masters swimmers.
