Okoth knocked out John Mwanzia in the Lightweight final

Kenya Defence Force's pugilist Nick Commander Okoth emerged as the best male boxer in the Nairobi edition of the President Jamal Boxing Championship that concluded yesterday with Kibra Olympic Boxing Club's Bantamweight Amina Martha taking the honours in the female category.

Retired light flyweight boxer Stephen Muchoki was in attendance and presented the award to Okoth during the awarding ceremony.

In the final bout, Commander was too much for the G44 boxer John Mwanzia and knocked him out while Martha saw off Alice Waiyego in all three rounds.

In the race to the final, Okoth outclassed Prisons Francis Riziki in the semifinal and it took the intervention of the referee to stop the contest and see the KDF boxer book a slot in the final.

Kenya Police took the overall team award with 25 points, with KDF coming second with 19 points as Kibra Olympic Boxing Club sealed the podium places with nine points.

Hit Squad head coach Benjamin Musa noted that the top six pugilists in each category will proceed to the Kisumu edition set to be held early next month, adding that the top two in each category in Kisumu will make the provisional Hit Squad for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

“The six in each category will have another opportunity to prove their mettle in the second edition of the competition planned for Kisumu. We will then select the top two in each category to comprise the provisional Hit Squad. It's thereafter that we will hold a training camp and pick our final squad for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham,” Musa is quoted by The Star.
