He takes over from Retired Lt. General Jackson Tuwei, who has held the position since 2019.
Kithi, who has declared his bid for the Kilifi Senator’s seat in 2027, will serve as chairman of SASDF for a period of three years.
Tuwei, who is also the Athletics Kenya President, handed over to his successor on Wednesday, 4 March, during a ceremony attended by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya and other top government officials.
Speaking during the handover, Mvurya commended the outgoing chairman for showing exemplary leadership and dedication during his seven-year tenure.
“Your stewardship helped transform the Fund into a stronger and more responsive institution for supporting local talent. I want to thank you for your service to the country.
Under your tenure, our sportsmen and women were accorded dignity,” said Mvurya.
He further pointed out that the securitising of the fund has created positive reforms, which have ensured that federations receive timely and better disbursements, enabling athletes to prepare adequately and represent the country with pride.
Mvurya challenged the incoming chairman to continue with the commendable work of his predecessor, even as he promised that his ministry will accord him the necessary support needed to succeed.
“Continue with the good work done by your predecessor, even as you address the priorities within the fund. I am confident that under your leadership, the Fund will continue to grow and deliver even greater impact for Kenyan sports,” said Mvurya.
Tuwei, on his part, thanked the ministry for their support during his seven-year tenure.
“I am glad that together we managed to undertake meaningful and impactful work over the years.
Talent has been nurtured, federations strengthened, and I am confident that the securitisation foundation we established will give talented Kenyans an even better opportunity to thrive and compete globally,” he said.
