League action will be at Strathmore University after several seasons of playing at Upper Hill

After a successful pre-season tournament played at the Strathmore University grounds on the weekend of February 13 and 14, the Nairobi Basketball Association (NBA) league is set to jump off on Saturday, 20 February with matches set to be played at the same grounds.

Initially, the league has been played at the Upper Hill School but restrictions due to Covid-19 saw the organisers move action to the more accessible university grounds. In the pre-season tournament, Multi Media University (MMU) stunned premier league side Strathmore Blades to lift the men’s trophy while Strathmore Swords were on the losing end against Equity Hawks in the women’s competition.

Sixteen teams in the men’s Eastern Conference and a similar number in the Western Conference are expected to do battle for a chance at promotion to the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) men’s division two league while 13 ladies’ teams will be looking for a ticket to the KBF women’s division one league. So far, all the women’s slots have been filled while three teams from the men’s Eastern Conference and four from the Western one are yet to confirm their participation.

“We are ready to begin our league but some of the teams, especially the institution-based ones, are asking for an extension before they can confirm their participation. Some, especially the university and school teams might join later on in the first leg but we move on regardless,” said NBA fixtures secretary Caleb Osewe.

Blue Eagles jump off the women’s league on Saturday with a clash against Olympic Tigress while Nexus and Kueie Foundation start off the men’s western conference action. The Eastern Conference will have Moischers take on Kivuli in the conferences’ opener.
