National handball men's team land tough group in Africa Cup tourney

The Africa Championship is the African qualifying tournament for the 2023 World Men’s Handball Championship in Poland and Sweden.

Kenya Handball men's national team have landed a tough pool B that has 2020 semi finalists Angola, Morocco and Nigeria for the Africa Cup of Nations set to take place in Gulmim, Morocco from 13 to 23 January 2022. 

The draw for the 25th edition of the African Cup of Nations for senior men, took place on Wednesday 8 December at the headquarters of the African Handball Confederation in Abidjan. 

Group A has Tokyo Olympics fourth-place finishers and the competition's defending champions Egypt, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon and Cameroon. Group C will see silver medalist and record title holders Tunisia battle Cape Verde, Guinea and Senegal. 

At the end of the preliminary round, the first two teams from each group as well as the two teams ranked best third will qualify for the Quarter-Finals, Semi-finals and Final.

The last edition of the biennial competition saw Egypt dethrone Tunisia to book a ticket to the Tokyo Olympics Games. Kenya, participating for the third time after a debut in 2004 and again in 2016 lost all their three group matches for an early exit in the main Cup contention. 

The Peter Mwathi-coached men arrived in Tunisia late, missing their opening match against DRC, who were awarded a 10-0 win as per competition rules. They faced Egypt the following day, losing 19-44 before going down 26-17 to Guinea in the final match. 

The side lost by a solitary goal to Libya at 27-26 in the placement matches and 14-30 to Nigeria. They won a fifteenth-place match 28-17 against Zambia. 

Group A: Egypt, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon and Cameroon

Group B: Angola, Morocco, Nigeria and Kenya

Group C: Tunisia, Cape Verde, Guinea and Senegal
