Okall, a member of Kenyan basketball side Nairobi City Thunder, received the award on Wednesday, 27 May, during an in-person presentation at the BK Arena in Rwanda.
The accolade, which seeks to recognizes a BAL player for their exceptional contributions to their community, was the culmination of over two months of online campaigns, which eventually led him to beating three other finalists to the trophy.
“Look at God,” Okall, who became the sixth winner of the award, posted on X, shortly after the announcement. “2026 Ubuntu Trophy winner! A testament to the power of community, mentorship, and the beautiful game of basketball. Immensely grateful for this recognition, and committed to continuing the work. Together, we rise. Thank you so much.”
Beyond his on-the-court activities with Thunder, Okall was recognized for his women’s basketball initiative, Th3 Swish, which has over the years empowered the next generation of women.
Through his program, Okall, a Nakuru native, has offered young women platforms to grow athletically and professionally, while accessing pathways in education, employment, and personal development.
To date, Th3 Swish, a ball club plying their trade in the KNBL Premier League, has reached over 300 players from diverse backgrounds, including participants from across Africa and the deaf basketball community, many of whom have advanced to professional play, further education, or employment.
Through Okal’s leadership, the program has cut a niche by combining high-level basketball, with mentorship, life skills, and mental health support.
“I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the incredible individuals working tirelessly behind the scenes at Swish,” Okall wrote in a separate statement. “Your dedication, passion, and hard work are the foundation of everything we continue to build. This achievement belongs to all of us, and I am genuinely grateful for your commitment to our shared vision.”
In scooping the award, Okall was also awarded a $10,000 (Ksh1,295,500) donation, which will be made to a charity of his choosing, subject to BAL approval.
The three other award finalists included: Joshua Ozabor of the Johannesburg Giants, Ibrahim Famouke Doumbia of the Maktown Flyers, and Dar City’s Hasheem Thabeet.
