Preston Bungei believes Kenya is capable of staging huge upsets in the upcoming AfroBasket championship.

Kenya Men’s Basketball guard Preston Bungei has fired a warning of surprises ahead of FIBA AfroBasket 2021 Finals slated for Kigali, Rwanda in August.

Morans sealed a place in the finals of the tournament after staging a massive upset against 11-time African champions Angola back in February.

Bungei who was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico USA to a Kenyan father and an American mother promised surprises in the continental showpiece.

"If we can continue to build on that team chemistry and work on executing on offence and defence, I think that we will surprise a lot of people in Rwanda."

"Off the top of my head, I know that for stretches in the games we struggled to execute on offence and had to take tough contested shots," said Bungei in an interview with FIBA.

Bungei made his debut for Kenya in the qualifiers and was forced to sit out of the First Round as he was yet to secure a Kenyan passport, a situation that left him disappointed.

The 6ft 6 playmaker who plies his trade with Randers Cimbria in Denmark Basketligaen heaped praise on the Morans team and was confident of beating giants like Senegal.

"I would go to war with this group of guys against any country and firmly believe that we have a chance to win. It is vital that the team have a solid training camp,”

"I knew that with our full squad we were capable of beating Senegal and Angola. Although we came up short against Senegal, we showed the world what we were capable of in the game against Angola,” he added.

With the Afrobasket set to kick off in less than four months, the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) expressed their interest in calling foreign-based players in May to begin the tournament preparations.
