CS Ababu Namwamba will remain to be the man in charge of the ministry

The Ministry of Youth Affairs, the Arts and Sports was on Wednesday 4 October evening reconstituted and renamed as the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sport, a presidential prerogative on the reorganization of the Government of Kenya released to the press confirmed.

In the move, one initiated by the Head of State and Government - President William Ruto - and in pursuant to Article 132 of the Constitution through Presidential action, the new Ministry and State Department of Youth Affairs and Sport will have one of its components - The Arts - shifted to a new ministry portfolio.

The new ministry portfolio will be known as the Ministry of Gender, Culture, the Arts and Heritage, and will incorporate the State Department of Culture, the Arts and Heritage, stemming from the initially known State Department of Culture and Heritage.

Even with eight Cabinet Secretaries being re-assigned duties under the same act, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports was unaffected, with Hon. Aisha Jumwa being handed the new reins of the Gender, Culture, the Arts and Heritage Ministry, after serving as the CS for Public Service, Affirmative Action and Gender in the country.

The Department of Sports existed in the Ministry of Gender, Sports, Culture and Social Services, before it was transferred to the Ministry of State for Youth Affairs forming the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MOYAS) in May 2008.

In this year’s annual budget, the sports sector was given a budget of 6.4 billion, of which it existed as Sports, Arts, and Social Development Fund.

It remains to be seen what comes of the new development, with the Sports ministry being asked to carry responsibility for the Arts sector in the past.
