Mercy Wanyama shines bright, nominated to Euro-Basket All Spanish LF2 League second team

She led the Kenyan women's team to the FIBA Afrobasket championships in 2021
Kenya Lionesses forward Mercy Wanyama was nominated to the second team of the 2023 EuroBasket All Spanish LF2 league awards for the 2023 regular season announced on Friday night.
Following a remarkable season where the Kenyan led her team - Club Mariscos Anton Cortegada - on both points and rebounds, averaging 12.9 points, 10.0 rebounds and a 49% field goal shooting percentage per game this season, Wanyama was among the group of ten players that made up the first and second teams selections as posted by Eurobasket Center.
“Congratulations to our client, Kenyan international All Star Mercy Wanyama on her nomination to the 2023 Eurobasket.com All Spanish LF2 League,” her agency team- DC Sports Agency - posted on their social media handles on Friday night.
Wanyama, a former Storms player responded: “Truly honored. It was a tough season but we made it somehow. Grateful to God and all those who pushed and supported me.”
Wanyama, sister to Kenyan footballing stars Victor Wanyama and McDonald Mariga, recently concluded her regular season with AD Cortegada in a 57-53 win on April 8 and was for her exploits named in the league’s second team alongside Carolina Bernardesco (Arxil), Pillar Cornellas (Leida), Tereza Sediakova (CD Talent) and Cesarina Capellan of Leon.
The first team was dominated by Iyana Martin (Segle XXI), Amy Griffin (Plasencia), Aya Traore (Sant Josep), Marija Stojiljkovic (Unicaja) and Mariana Muadi of Almeria.
The award adds up to Wanyama’s list of individual accolades that includes; Kenya Basketball Federation League MVP, Africa Zone V best Power Forward and Zone V best center awards.
Wanyama’s career includes stops at Kenya’s Equity Hawks - where she played from 2016 to 2018, a brief stint at Nigeria and Spanish club Ensino - where she played for two seasons.
She has featured for Kenya’s U-23 national team and was recently involved for the Lionesses in the Zone V championships where Kenya finished third behind winners Egypt and Uganda.
