Gicharu acknowledges his wife Hellen Ngugi for her role in ensuring his dream of becoming an author is actualized
Known for his hilarious narrations of his grass-to-grace boxing story on social media, Benson Gicharu has finally fulfilled a dream born from such narrations by releasing a book documenting his life’s journey.
The 39-year-old is regarded as one of Kenya’s best boxers of this generation, having won silver at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi (flyweight), a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games (bantamweight), and qualified for the 2012 Olympics (flyweight).
In the 2010 Commonwealth Games, he lost to Suranjoy Mayengbam in the final. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he lost his first bout (16:19) to Egyptian Hesham Abdelaal.
“It’s finally out,” Gicharu announced on social media with a photo of the finished product. “I have been working tirelessly day and night to ensure that I give you guys something that you will enjoy reading and get inspired.”
Gicharu acknowledges his wife, Hellen Ngugi, who, after noticing his love for writing, bought him his first diary. This gesture marked the start of his journey to becoming a published author.
Gicharu held a mini-launch over the weekend at the Olympics Boxing Day celebration in Mombasa. The grand launch will be on August 3.
“Half of the amount that I will make from the book will go to Mukuru Fight 4 Life Boxing Initiative. I believe we were not created to make money and die but to make a difference. That difference/change is what I want this book to make in Mukuru,” he stated.
