Matteo Berrettini delivers a near-flawless masterclass as the Russian smashes his racquet on a clay court, he clearly still can't stand

It was chaos, frustration, and total collapse for Daniil Medvedev on Wednesday in Monte Carlo, where the Russian suffered the first 6-0, 6-0 defeat of his career, courtesy of a ruthless Matteo Berrettini.

On a surface he has long despised, Medvedev looked completely out of sorts. After dropping the opening set and immediately falling behind in the second, his frustration boiled over. First came a racquet throw into the backboards, then, to the crowd's amusement, he retrieved it and smashed it into the ground repeatedly until it snapped in half.

The outburst summed up a nightmare performance.

Medvedev won just two points across the final 11 games, finishing with 28 unforced errors, five double faults, and a woeful return behind his second serve. For a player who once called clay "a surface for losers," this was another painful chapter in his uneasy relationship with it.

Meanwhile, Berrettini was nearly untouchable.

The Italian, currently ranked outside the top 80 and rebuilding after injury, described it as "one of the best performances of my life", and it showed. His game plan clicked perfectly, his weapons firing with precision in a dominant display that left Medvedev with no answers.

Elsewhere, another early shock saw Andrey Rublev fall in straight sets to Zizou Bergs, adding to a day of surprises in Monte Carlo.
