The race for Premier League promotion is heating up as teams compete for the top positions
Mavens Tacticians have continued their remarkable unbeaten run, extending their streak to 26 matches after the weekend Kenya National Chess League matches played at the Co-operative University in Karen.
Handled by one of Kenya’s most successful coaches, Tom Amwai, they secured two strong victories: a 3.5-1.5 win over Elite Chess Academy & Club and a dominant 4-1 win against NACHA Kings.
With 10 wins and a draw in 11 games this season, they now lead the Kenya Premier Chess League standings with 31 points.
This puts them just one point ahead of reigning champions, Equity Chess Club, who have a game in hand.
Amwai credited the team’s success to rigorous preparation and exceptional team cohesion.
“Despite being our first season at the top, we are determined to do well and have been putting in a lot of preparations, and it’s finally paying off. The title race is still too close to call, and we are keeping it one day at a time,” he said.
In other matches also played at the weekend, Nairobi Chess Club edged out Nacha Kings 3-2 while Elite Chess Academy downed Black Knights 3-2.
Visiting Nakuru Chess Club found the going tough after falling 3-2 to Knight Chess Academy.
In the Super League, the University of Nairobi (UON) have moved to the top of the standings, making a strong push for promotion back to the Premier League.
They achieved this after winning all their weekend matches, defeating Knights Chess Academy A (4.5-0.5), Litlife House Chess Club (4-1), and Membley Titans A (3-2).
They now lead with 45 points from 15 wins and a loss, closely followed by Daystar University and Mavens Chess Club, both with 43 points.
The race for Premier League promotion is heating up as teams compete for the top positions.
In other Super League matches played at the weekend, United States International University (USIU) went down 1.5-3.5 to Black Knights dealing a big blow to their promotion hopes.
Mombasa Chess League did not honour their weekend fixtures, giving two walkovers.
