In an effort to expand the pool of disciplines that the county youth can engage in to get opportunities, Makueni County sports department has introduced cricket in its ranks.

The partnership with Cricket Kenya has seen the federation roll out a project that will see qualified personnel train coaches and bring the practical know-how to the youth interested in the sport.

Launching the project on Wednesday 30 at Enzai playground in Mukaa, Kilome sub county Makueni sport director Ambrose Kisoi said plans are underway to have the same rolled out in the other sub-counties.

"This is just the pilot project. We will have a sit-down with the federation and agree on a working formula for the rest of the county. The interest is there and they are willing to walk this journey with us.

At the moment, they are holding one-day clinics that involve both players and coaches after which plans will be made to equip the coaches who show commitment in learning the sport and advancing it at the grassroots," explained Kisoi in an interview with Mozzart Sport

Additionally, 25 pupils got the chance to have a first hand experience in bowling and batting as they began exciting journeys that could see them become experienced cricketers in the region and beyond

"We were privileged to host six top-class Cricket Kenya professionals including David Obuya, former Kenyan cricketer and the national team coach among others. They held sessions with the pupils as well as the coach trainees.

They managed to leave some equipment that will go a long way in ensuring the continuity of this project and we hope they can do the same for the other regions," Kisoi added.

The county will be embarking on a programme to ensure that the game is introduced in the remaining five sub-counties by June, 2023.
