The side is four matches away from completing their regular league season that paves way for a top-eight playoff.

Equity Hawks, on the weekend, suffered their biggest loss in recent times, a 30-point thrashing by archrivals Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) in a 78-48 outcome in a Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) women’s league encounter to dent their chances of finishing top of the table in the regular league.

However, coach David Maina is confident his charges will dust themselves from the humiliation and ready themselves for a fight of their life as they look to defend the title they won in 2019.

“There is no doubt we will finish second on the regular league log. That gives us an uphill task in the playoffs as we will have more away matches. However, that is not new. We have been in this position before and still managed to fight our way to the title and this season is no different," said coach Maina.

Before last weekend’s encounter away in Mombasa, Hawks had gone ten matches unbeaten, having defeated the dockers by four points in the first leg encounter.

“Preparations for the return leg against KPA were good but on the court, the players did not follow instructions and KPA took advantage of the simple basic mistakes to win the game. For instance, we turned over the ball 37 times which is unheard of for my team and we paid for it.

We have since regrouped, talked about our performance in Mombasa and the good thing is we know our mistakes and areas of weakness. In the remaining four matches, the focus will be on getting the players’ confidence back and work on our decision making on the court ahead of the playoffs,” added Maina.
