Magana confident Nairobi will triumph in National Junior Chess Championship

The national competition will be held at Khadija secondary school from 1st- 6th April 2022.
The Nairobi contingent heading to the Kenya National Chess Junior Championship set for 1 to 6 April in Mombasa remains confident of posting good results for a chance to make the national team.
Under the watchful eyes of Candidate Master Benjamin Magana who has been overseeing their training sessions, the squad is looking to be part of the winners who get a ticket to represent the country in the Africa Youth Chess Championship in Zambia.

Winners from each category in the tournament from Under 8 to Under 18 both boys and girls will form the Kenyan junior team that will be representing the country in the continental championship slated for June 2022 in Lusaka.
Magana is using his vast experience in the game and knowledge to prepare the team while at the same time preparing for the national Chess league.
"Both the juniors and I are benefiting from these interactions. Coaching them helps me remain in shape. I am confident they are ready and will do well in Mombasa," Magana said.
In addition to the Nairobi team, Magana has also been tutoring other juniors in Kitale, Transnzoia County who will also be participate in this year’s fete in Mombasa.
The KCB Chess Club player is using his coaching experience to prepare for the national league which continues in May after its resumption following the Covid-19 hiatus.
He is also among the 10-man Kenyan team that will be representing the nation in this year’s World Chess Olympiad set for Chennai, India. Initially, the Olympiad was scheduled to be played in Russia but due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, it was moved to India.
Meanwhile, Village Market open chess competition came to an end last weekend where KCB’s Martin Njoroge who is also the defending champion of the national league emerged the winner amassing 6.0 points.
He was followed by his counterpart Bernard Nguku who gathered 5.5 points. James Nyaga and Mike Mwangi came in third and fourth respectively.
In the female section, top seed Joyce Nyaruai of KCB Chess club scooped the top award.
