There are five rounds of matches left to the end of the KHU Women's Premier League
With about five fixtures to the end of the season, Lakers Hockey Club are placed second in the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Women’s Premier League behind leaders Blazers.
Yet, with a seven point-gap between them are record winners Blazers, and a game at hand, the Kisumu-based side is still an opportunity to bag their maiden title.
"We're not giving up," Lakers Team Manager John Paul Otieno told Mozzart.
"We only have two away games out of the remaining six for us and our plan is to make good use of the home support to narrow the gap," Otieno said.
The game at hand is against strugglers University of Nairobi Ladies, who are yet to pick a win in the five fixtures they have played so far.
Lakers were in Nairobi over the weekend where they harvested six crucial points against Wolverines and Amira Sailors at City Park.
Both matches were by slim 1-0 margins.
Meanwhile, defending champions Strathmore University Ladies are not worried about a slow season as they are rebuilding.
"It's the university cycle," Meshack Senge, the Strathmore University Ladies coach, told Mozzart Sport.
"We're rebuilding after losing the majority of our last squad; over 90% of the current squad are fresh from High School and lack club Hockey experience," Meshack said.
Strathmore are fourth on the log after nine games with 12 points. They have only managed three wins, three draws and an equal number of losses.
"The team is gaining the experience they need to compete at this level and I'm confident they will be able to compete for the title next season," Meshack said.
This season, according to Meshack, will also be for establishing an identity. "Playing high school and club Hockey are two different experiences and the new girls will have to adopt and have a new identity, and that's what we're working on now."
