Football enters the knockout stages despite scenes of violence and hooliganism when Koderobara played Musingu High School in the final pool match on Tuesday
Reigning Kenya and East Africa Rugby Sevens champions Koyonzo High School will not feature in this year’s Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Association (FEASSSA).
The Stormers suffered a 10-5 defeat to Bwake of Rift Valley in the closely contested quarterfinal match played on Tuesday in Kisii.
Bwake took an early 5-0 lead through Calistas Wanjala, who broke through Koyonzo's defence. However, Miracle Kiptoo equalized just after the halftime hooter, making the score 5-5 at the break.
In the second half, Wanjala once again proved to be a thorn in Koyonzo's defence, scoring in the right wing near the corner post to regain a five-point advantage for Bwake.
Despite multiple attempts, Koyonzo could not break through Bwake's resolute defence, and the match ended with Bwake victorious at 10-5.
Speaking after the match, Bwake’s coach Cleophas Mikiki could not contain his excitement. He praised the team for their resilience, stating that they stood strong against the formidable Koyonzo side, who had claimed the national title for the past two years.
“It was tough but we were mentally ready for them. Koyonzo has amazing talent and very good players and all we had to do was to use our opportunities and defend well to get through and I am happy it worked.
The journey is not yet done and we regroup on Wednesday for the semis.”
Only one quarterfinal was played with the remaining three matches slated for Wednesday morning at Kisii grounds.
Last year's bronze medalists, St. Mary's School Yala, are set to compete against Kabianga, while Kisii School will go up against Meru School.
Western Region silver medalists, Vihiga High School, will face Nairobi School in the final quarterfinal match.
Football
Football enters the knockout stages despite scenes of violence and hooliganism when Koderobara played Musingu High School in the final pool match on Tuesday.
Koderobara were trailing 1-0 before the referee was forced to stop the match with only 10 minutes left. Fans invaded the field, exchanging fists and throwing stones before police officers intervened.
Despite that, a crunch fixture is expected when Rift Valley champions St Joseph Boys Kitale face off against Musingu School in a high-stake semifinal match scheduled for Gusii Stadium.
Musingu made the semis after finishing top of Group A with nine points after winning all their preliminary matches.
The Western Region champions saw off Machakos Boys 1-0 on the opening day of the games before edging Kirangari 2-1 on Monday. The chaotic 1-0 win over Koderobara sealed Musingu’s top spot.
Their opponents St Joseph made the last four after finishing second in Group B. They started their pool campaign with a 1-0 loss to Nairobi’s Highway.
They then heaped a 6-0 misery on Takaba from North Eastern 6-0 on Monday before whitewashing Dr Aggrey High School 6-0.
Nairobi champions Highway Secondary School will face Central region’s Kirangari High School in the second semifinal.
Basketball Boys
National champions Onjiko are itching for a second appearance at the East Africa games.
The school advanced to the semis of the KSSSA basketball 3x3 tournament after defeating Sigalame 21-7 in the quarterfinals.
Sawagongo High School from Siaya County advanced to the semifinals after a surprising 21-15 victory over Dagoretti. St. Joseph Boys also progressed by defeating Machakos 21-10, while Kamusinga ousted Laiser Hill with a 15-8 win.
Onjiko will face familiar foes Sawagongo High School in the semis. This match will be a repeat of the Nyanza region finals. The other semis will see Kamusinga play St Joseph Boys.
Basketball Girls
Butere is set to face Raila Education, while Nasokol will compete against St. Joseph Girls Kitale as the competition for the vacant national title heats up. Defending champions, Ototo Mixed from Homa Bay did not qualify for the nationals, nor did they reach the Nyanza Regional finals last month.
Volleyball
In girls' volleyball, defending champions Kesogon will take on Lugulu Girls in the semifinals as they aim to retain their national title. East African champions Kwanthanze will go up against Soweto from Nairobi in the other semifinal match.
In boys' volleyball, Hospital Hill will compete against Namwela, while Cheptil will face off against newcomers Nyabondo from Nyanza.
