Virani sealed the KNRC Division One Championship title and also bagged his maiden career victory in Nanyuki following the disqualification of the top three finishers in the leg.
Kenya Motorsport Federation (KMSF) have defended the move to have the Personality of the Year award winner put to a vote as opposed to previous years where a panel sat to deliberate on drivers’ achievements throughout the season before coming up with a winner.
In a press statement meant to bring the matter to rest after uproar following the awarding of Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) Division One winner Aakif Virani as the 2021 Motorsport personality of the year, KMSF says they respected the wishes of the majority who voted for the Skoda Fabia driver.
The Gala Night was held on 15 January 2022, at Kasarani Stadium to reward and recognize the best performers in various categories of Motorsports in 2021.
“The highlight of the evening was the 2021 Kenya Motorsports Personality of the Year, the highest accolade for any individual who has done exemplary work for the good of Motorsport whether as a competitor, official, or volunteer since 1960.
Tonight, in an unprecedented move, top rally drivers, navigators and even KMSF officials are calling out the fraud at the federation. They're all unanimous- the awards ceremony was a fraud and the alleged winner is an individual not worthy of the award. pic.twitter.com/TNt4Y92KRO

As a fair way to end grumbling associated with this process every now and then when some quarters feel aggrieved, the KMSF invited all Competition License holders, Motorsport Council members, and Commissions to decide amongst themselves who deserved this coveted trophy in a democratic manner,” the statement reads.

The federation has laid bare the results as tallied, using the Online Google Polling Platform where Virani got 23 votes with the closest competitor Carl Tundo managing seven votes while Nikhil Sachania was third with three votes.
ARC winner who also doubles as the KNRC champion, Tundo, had taken to social media to bemoan the manner in which the annual award was conducted with accusations of voter lobbying surfacing.
