Kesekwa impressed with uptake of Beach Handball, reveals plans to revamp the league

Kenya is also looking to participate in the 2022 Africa Junior and Senior Championships.

The Kenya Beach Handball technical director Titus Kesekwa is glad that the sport is slowly gaining approval from the public going by the number of teams contesting for top honours in the league playoffs held last Sunday in Nyali.

Twenty teams took part in the playoffs for the season that began in October last year, attendance that was pleasing to the eye of Kesekwa who promised to train more coaches.

Our league attracted people from all over the country. The country is starting to embrace the sport. Seeing the venue packed to capacity is encouraging. We plan to train more coaches because we expect to have more teams participating in the next league season,” he told NOC-K media.

Kesekwa who doubles up as the beach handball national team coach and in CAVB beach handball working group is optimistic that Kenya will compete at the world championships.

Kenya is also looking to participate in the 2022 Africa Junior and Senior Championships.The global showpiece will be held from 21st – 26th June in Crete, Greece, with the African Championships being held from the 8th to 12th of April 2022 in Togo.

 “It is our dream to compete in the world championship now that the International Handball Federation has released the dates. We would also like to thank NOC-K for supporting the development of handball in the country, through the ongoing Development of National Sports System project," he said.

As part of developing the sport and preparing for the international events, the Handball Federation intends to revamp the league that give the players and the coaches the platform to pick the best.

“It’s exciting to see the level of interest people are developing in beach handball, it would be great to see more countries in Africa taking part in the sport,” he said.

Saints of Mombasa clinched the top award in the men's category after beating Pwani University while Coast Queens beat Glorious Queens in a match that was decided through a shootout in the ladies' category.
