The rising star on Saturday, 28 March announced himself to the world after securing a knockout victory over Poland’s Jakub Jablonski at the Woodside Leisure Centre Arena in Watford, UK.
Opati, who began his professional journey in January last year, dominated from the get-go in the UWC MMA League light weight bout, winning inside 33 seconds of Round One.
The knock-out blow came after a brief exchange between the pair, which Opati took advantage of.
“It was an explosive fight from the very first second,” Opati said after the bout. “We both came in sharp, but I stayed composed under pressure and imposed myself early.
There was a quick exchange, a few heavy shots landed clean, and I could feel the momentum shift almost immediately. Once I saw the opening, I pressed forward, stayed disciplined, and forced the stoppage with a right hook.”
Reflecting on the fight, which was ranked as one of the fastest finishes in the UWC League,Jablonski said: “I came prepared for a war, but he [Opati] caught the moment better than I did. That is the nature of this sport, one opening can decide everything. I respect the execution, and I will come back sharper.”
With the win behind him, Opati is wasting no time in grabbing his next opportunity, saying he was planning on a quick comeback.
“Right now I am taking a short recovery, reviewing the performance, and then getting straight back into training,” Opati commented on his future plans. “July is when the next fight is.”
On that bout, he added: “Nothing officially confirmed yet, but we are already looking at that next opportunity to fight again.”
At only 20, the young Kenyan hopeful is looking to make his mark, and carry the nation’s fighting spirit onto the global stage.
