This year’s event promises an intense competition due to the influx of talent

The stage is ready for the highly anticipated Kenya National Chess League scheduled for May 27 at the KCB Sports Club. The league, which comprises two divisions, the Premier League and Super League, promises intense competition.

The league’s defending champions, KCB, aim to extend their dominance after securing their maiden title in 2019. They would successfully defend it in 2021 and 2022.

Meanwhile, newly promoted sides, Kisumu Chess Club, Lighthouse Alpha, and Knights Chess Academy, are also looking to reclaim their pride in the league. What makes the league even more interesting this time is the return of 2018 Champions; Equity Chess Clubs who missed out on the 2022 edition.

According to Chess League Secretary Anthony Kionga, this year’s competition will be intense due to the influx of talent across the teams.

“This year’s Kenya National Chess League is expected to be incredibly tough and competitive. The level of talent across the teams is exceptionally high and we foresee some fierce battles on the chessboard,” Kionga said. "The teams have been active in the signing of players. The majority have been recruited from countries like Egypt, Uganda, France, and South Sudan. This will elevate the overall quality of the league.”

In the Super League, several new entrants will be keen to make their mark. Teams such as USIU and Mavens Tacticians will be aiming for top finishes in order to secure promotion to the Premier League.

At the same time, the relegated teams, Strathmore University and the University of Nairobi, are determined to bounce back and reclaim their positions in the top tier.

Both league categories consist of 17 teams each. The bottom three teams in the Premier League will be relegated at the end of the season while the top three teams in the Super League will earn promotion.
