
Kenya names team for Zone 4.4 Chess Championships

Kenya will be represented by nine players in next week’s Zone 4.4 Championships set to be held at Utalii Hotel from Wednesday 5 to Tuesday 11 February.
They include four ladies and five men. Ladies champion Sasha Mongeli, Julie Mutisya, Bella Naishipae and Shannon Bulimo form the female team.
The men's national champion Robert Macligeyo is among the Kenyan men taking part in the event.
He will be joined by Lenny Mataiga who finished runners-up in the national championships, Hugh Misikho, Christian Mugambi and Rishit Ravat.
Apart from Kenya, Somalia, Somaliland, and South Sudan will also take part in the event. Uganda who had confirmed taking part in the championships have pulled out.
The players will be fighting for a Ksh600,000 prize fund on offer for the winners and a chance to be declared the zonal champion.
Elsewhere, the first edition of the Private Schools Individual Chess Championship is set to be held on Saturday 15 February at Makini School.
The one-day event will bring together private and international schools for a chance to represent the country at next year’s Elite Academy tournament to be held in Russia.
According to Tournament Director Rodah Olisa there will be two categories for the Event-Cadet and Youth.
“The cadet category will feature players in the following age groups, under-8, under-10 and under-12 while the youth will feature players in the under-14, under-16 and under-18,” she said.
The participation fee is set at Ksh1,000 and entries close on Friday 14 February at noon. Players will feature in six rounds with each one lasting 25 minutes.
On the same day, the fourth edition of the St. Bakhita Youth Championships will be held at the school.
The event will feature six rounds with a rated section of under-23 category. All other categories, under-7, under-9 and under-13 will be unrated. Trophies and medals will be given out to winners in the junior categories.
There will be cash prizes in the under-23 category where the winners will walk away with Ksh7,000, runners-up Ksh3,000 and best lady player pocketing Ksh3,000.
