The championship will be decided on the final round when the two banking greats clash.
Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Chess Team are back at the top of the Premier League after winning all their matches at the weekend.
The bankers now only need a draw on the last day of competition to defend their title.
During league matches played at KCB Sports Club, the league champions beat Knights Chess Academy 3.5-1.5 before squeezing a 3-2 win over Nakuru Chess Club.
The results enabled the bankers to overtake Equity Bank at the top of the standings as they increased their points tally to 11.
Second-placed Equity Bank have 10 points from 12 matches. They beat Westlands Chess Club 5-0 at the weekend. The winner of the league will be determined on the last day of competitions when KCB meet Equity in what is expected to be a grudge match.
In other premier league matches played at the weekend, NACHA Kings fought hard to beat Kenyatta University 3.5-1.5, while Blacknights and Anchor Chess Club drew 2.5-2.5.
After losing to KCB, Nakuru Chess Club beat Daystar University 3-2. Nairobi Chess Club another title favorite managed a comfortable 4-1 win over Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) to stay third on the log with nine points. They must win all their remaining matches to have any chances of winning the title.
Fourth placed NACHA Academy struggled before edging out Lighthouse Alpha 3-2 to maintain fourth place on nine points.
In the super league, Mavens Tacticians are well on the way to being promoted as they retained top spot after last weekend’s matches.
Tacticians are top of the 17-team log on 11 points. This is after they were awarded a 5-0 walk-over against United States International University (USIU) who did not turn up for the match.
